Paragraphs - General Notes

DEFINITION

A paragraph is a group of closely related sentences dealing with one topic.



PARTS OF A PARAGRAPH

1.  Topic Sentence - to introduce the main idea
2.  Body Sentences - to suport th emain idea (examples, reasons, facts, stories, etc.
3.  Concluding Sentence  a.  Restates the topic sentence
                                                        b.  Summarizes the main point(s)


Paragraphs should be UNIFIED
This means everything relates or fits under the main topic

Paragraphs should be COHERENT 
This means everything is placed in a logical order

TYPES OF PARAGRAPHS

SIMPLE EXPLANATORY - lists reasons, gives directions, explains parts                                             

DESCRIPTIVE - informs by creating an image (mental picture) using  details, the five senses, figurative language and more

NARRATIVE - entertains or teaches by telling a story

PERSUASIVE - convinces someone to act or believe something

COMPARE / CONTRAST - points out similarities and differences to evaluate or explain
